Christmas Newsletter 2013

This year has been a fun, exciting and busy one at our house!  My, how the time flies as we get older and as our kids get older!  Here is it, Christmas again!

Marshyl is still at Ariix during the day, running his department and watching over his 10 employees.  But his heart is truly in his “other job” with Send Out Cards.  We took a small hiatus from the business but are back on track and growing strong!  He has also been able to do many mentoring classes with life coach and mentor, Kirk Duncan this year that he really loves.

Kaiden turned 17 this year!  Yikes!  He finished up his 4 years of seminary and graduated in May.  But decided that he doesn't want to really be done with school yet, so he is at Layton High School taking their show choir class.  He is having a great time singing and dancing and performing.  He is on the very last stretch to his Eagle Scout award and did his project this fall collecting eye glasses to be sent and given away in Africa.  He stays busy hanging out with his friends, working at Ace Hardware and chauffeuring kids around to give mom a break.

Nic (15) stays busy with his homeschool and co-op assignments  and hanging out with friends.  He started ballroom dancing classes this year and loves it.  He also loves Boy Scouts.  He loves high adventure activities, staffing the National Youth Leadership Training camps and being in the Order of the Arrow.

Luke (13) stays busy playing with his friends and working on school.  He loves football and constantly has one in his hands, tossing it around.  The three boys took up long boarding this year and love it.  We did have a close call this summer when Nic wiped out and got a pretty major concussion after hitting his head on the ground.  After that it was helmets for everyone and they've all been safe while they've had fun.

Afton (10),  Makensi (7) and Garrett (5) get to hang out with me at home while the older boys are off to all of their activities.  They love to play with her friends and learn.  They are all old enough now to enjoy board games and we've had many an exciting game of Candyland and Sorry.  We also discovered the game Blokus this year and they love to play it, too.  They've discovered a love this year for BYU sports thanks to your neighbor who's brainwashed them thoroughly!  They won't wear any color but blue each day until they're sure Clyde won't be coming over to see them.  And don't ask them to wear red, that's the worst!  (Boo, Utes!)

All of the kids love acting and Kaiden, Nic & Luke were in Shakespeare's “ Comedy of Errors” in the spring and were able to go to Shakespeare Showdown and preform their play for other Shakespeare groups from all over the state.   Kaiden and Nic were in  “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: the Musical” this fall; Luke and Afton just finished up with “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and Kensi made her acting debut in “The Elf that cried 'Polar Bear'”.  They all love being on stage and can't get enough of it.

I feel busier than ever this year!  I mentor a class once a month for our co-op on Leadership and Government, I was called to be the Young Women's president in the ward in June and I will be assistant directing the spring Shakespeare play, “Love's Labours Lost” as well as general homeschooling and keeping up on the house.  Life is good and we are having fun and are so grateful for all the blessings we've been blessed with this  year.

We hope this card finds you healthy and happy and enjoying the season of the celebration of the Savior's birth.  We love you all!

Merry Christmas!

Vanguard Auction and Fund raiser -  We had our annual Vanguard auction and fundraiser this month.  The kids got their faces painted and had a blast.  Kaiden was the auctioneer and did a great job keeping everyone entertained.  The funniest parts were when our kids were bidding against each other for things and didn't even realize it!

Planetarium - Garrett and I went to the planetarium with Vangaurd and had so much fun that we went back the next day with the whole family.  We saw star shows and presentations on their sphere in the lobby!

Who knew you could go to Mars?

Walking on the moon with no gravity!
 Halloween -

Garrett is an alligator, Luke a Jedi, Afton a lalaloopsy named Kat and Kensi was a lololoopsy named Pillow.

This month we worked a lot on our homemaking skills as the harvest was coming in and we had a lot of canning to do!  We also got out with our friends to enjoy autumn!

We picked a ton of tomatoes from our garden and canned them!

We also picked a lot of apples and made them into applesauce.

When Afton saw all the apples, she wanted to make a pie.  It was yummy!
Vanguard Youth - Kaiden, Nic and Luke are in Vanguard Youth.  This month they learned about:
Theme:  Citizenship
Scripture: Alma 31:5 "And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them—therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God."

Halloween 2013

Luke started the Halloween season by dressing up as a Jedi for a church class party.  He looked awesome!

Luke as a Jedi, Garrett as an alligator, Afton as the Lololoopsy, Kat and Kensi as the Lololoopsy, Pillow!  Our neighbor, Martha made the girl's wigs.  They were awesome!

Luke decided that a Jedi was too calm and he wanted to be a punk rocker instead!  He totally pulled it off.  Clyde was a crazy BYU fan.  ("What?" you say, "Clyde's always a crazy BYU fan."  Yep!) and Kensi as Pillow.

Punk and crazy BYU fan!

Marshyl shocked the world with his Goth rocker costume - tattoos and all!  Here he is with Kensi, Garrett, Luke and Clyde.

We're all still in shock at how well he pulled this off!  Wow!  He kept the whole neighborhood guessing who it was until he would talk to them and then they were just in shock.

School: Sept 2013

Homeschool - Sept. 2013

Here we are again at the beginning of another school year.  There is something great about new beginnings and buying new school supplies!  All of my kids are officially in school this year!

 Kaiden is a senior

      Nic - 10th grade

Luke - 7th grade

Afton - 5th grade

Kensi - 2nd grade

Garrett - K

We have found amazing homeschool opportunities in Davis County and our school year looks GREAT!   Kaiden, Nic and Luke are in Vanguard Youth, a co-op for homeschool teens.  There are 5 chapters of Vanguard this year all over Utah and there are about 35 kids (20 families) in our Layton Chapter.  They work on learning the material all week and then get together for class on Weds.  The teacher, or mentors, are the moms and I have the privilege this year of mentoring Leadership and Government one week of the month.  The 4 weeks of the month rotate through Leadership and Government, History/Geography, Eureka (Science and Math) and Imaginative Arts.  What a blessing it is to have great school friends and great neighborhood friends for my kids.

Afton, Kensi and Garrett are still in homeschool with me full time.  Our focus this year is on the founding of America and the Revolutionary War period.  One week we do science and are working on Earth Science.  We are learning a lot, reading a lot, playing and crafting a lot and making sure we still have time for field trips, theater, and doing great things with our friends!
